Pori-based BioTech firm Volare right now introduced the closing of a €26 million funding spherical to construct Volare 01 – a facility aiming to develop into probably the most environment friendly protein manufacturing plant on the planet, and to advance its know-how.

The spherical consists of a mixture of fairness, mezzanine and senior loans, and public funding, with assist from Maki.vc, Firstminute Capital, Springvest, The Finnish Local weather Fund (to be merged with Finnish Business Funding), Finnvera, Norion Financial institution, and different monetary establishments.

Tuure Parviainen, Chief Science Officer and Co-founder of Volare, stated: “Volare was based on the imaginative and prescient that protein can – and should – be produced in a radically extra environment friendly and sustainable approach. Now, we’re coming into a brand new part: scaling as much as full industrial manufacturing. Our new facility will deliver our proprietary, zero-waste, fossil-free course of to life at scale, reworking meals trade byproducts into high-quality protein and strengthening Europe’s meals resilience.”

Based in 2021, Volare is a Finnish science-based firm growing and deploying know-how to show meals trade facet streams into sustainable insect protein, oil and fertilisers on an industrial scale. Volare’s merchandise reportedly change unsustainable alternate options and make the meals system round.

The brand new facility, set to start building in 2025, will function a cornerstone in scaling Volare’s proprietary insect protein know-how. This milestone seems to be to strengthen protein self-sufficiency and accelerates the shift towards sustainable, round meals manufacturing in Europe.

The European Union is at present simply 34% self-sufficient in protein concentrates (containing greater than 30% protein), based on the European Commission, leaving the area closely depending on imports. This reliance makes the meals system more and more susceptible to provide chain disruptions, geopolitical tensions, and worth fluctuations.

Volare’s scalable, native manufacturing mannequin goals to deal with this problem by changing meals trade byproducts into round, insect-based protein. The method reportedly reduces waste, helps regional agriculture, and strengthens the resilience and self-sufficiency of Europe’s meals system.

On the core of Volare’s method is the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens), “nature’s best bioreactor“. These bugs naturally convert meals trade byproducts into high-value assets. Whereas such byproducts are sometimes incinerated – losing their potential – Volare upcycles them into insect protein, oil, and fertiliser by way of its proprietary zero-waste, fossil-free course of.

Leveraging a brownfield location, Volare claims to affords a extra capital-efficient setup than greenfield builds. A number of key applied sciences built-in into the method obtain a 30% discount in processing vitality use and goals to chop hygienisation vitality use by 50%, enabling operational expenditure (OPEX) efficiency unseen within the insect know-how sector.

Volare’s sustainable substances have already gained traction in aquafeed, pet meals, and poultry feed, providing a scalable, confirmed different to environmentally intensive substances reminiscent of fishmeal, meat, and soy.

Jarna Hyvönen, CEO of Volare, added: “That is probably the most environment friendly approach to produce protein, combining low-value uncooked supplies, nature’s personal bioreactor, and proprietary ultra-efficient know-how – a mixture that’s exhausting to beat. The result’s a course of with emissions considerably decrease than typical alternate options, as much as 4–8 instances decrease than soy. This funding marks a significant step towards full-scale operations and reinforces Volare’s place on the forefront of the worldwide protein transition.”

An offtake settlement with Skretting, a world aquafeed chief, ensures long-term demand from the upcoming facility. In parallel, Volare is piloting insect-fed rainbow trout in Finland through a 150,000 kg collaboration with Alltech Fennoaqua, Kalankasvatus Vääräniemi, and Kalavapriikki.

The Volare 01 plant will produce protein equal to the yield of 200 million Baltic herrings yearly – roughly 18% of Finland’s complete business fish catch in protein phrases. Designed for scalability, the power will function a platform for future enlargement throughout Finland and Northern Europe.

Moreover, Co-founder Jarna Hyvönen, previously Chief Business Officer, has been appointed Chief Government Officer as of June 2025, bringing a monitor document in business technique to guide the corporate into its subsequent stage of development. Co-founder Tuure Parviainen, who has led Volare as CEO since its founding, will transition to the position of Chief Science Officer. On this new place, Parviainen will deal with advancing the corporate’s core know-how and overseeing the event of its new industrial facility.
