New Dawn Bio, a Wageningen-based DeepTech startup claiming to be growing the world’s first cultured wooden, has closed its €2.1 million oversubscribed pre-seed funding spherical to advance product growth and develop the interdisciplinary R&D group.

The spherical was led by CapitalT, with participation from Norrsken Evolve, Ontdekkers Group and a gaggle of outstanding angel buyers, together with Jelle Prins, co-founder of Cradle.

“Wooden has been a pinnacle to mankind for millennia, but we nonetheless haven’t found out a greater manner than to chop rectangular boards and beams from spherical tree trunks. For the primary time in historical past, we will now develop pre-shaped premium wooden. This funding lets us flip our breakthrough right into a product that industries can really use,” defined Tom Clement, co-founder and CEO at New Daybreak Bio.

Based in 2024 by Clement and Kianti Figler (COO), New Daybreak Bio grows wooden from tree stem cells in bioreactors, eliminating the necessity for logging and enabling supplies to be produced straight of their remaining kind.

The corporate explains that its expertise harvests stem cells from bushes, multiplies them in bioreactors, and directs the cells to harden into the form of the specified finish product. New Daybreak Bio asserts that this course of produces high-quality wooden grown as much as 10,000 instances sooner than typical forestry, with none logging.

New Daybreak Bio claims that its strategy has the potential to avoid wasting as much as 2.1 gigatons of direct CO₂ emissions yearly whereas preserving forests that host over half of Earth’s biodiversity. The corporate’s shaped-wood course of also can cut back clients’ value of products bought by as much as 80%, eliminating waste from sawing, routing, drilling, and glueing.

“New Daybreak Bio represents precisely the type of deep-tech, impact-driven firm CapitalT exists to again. Tom and Kianti have assembled a world-class group tackling an issue that’s each large in scale and largely neglected. Cultured wooden has the potential to rework complete provide chains whereas making a significant contribution to the planet. We’re proud to steer this spherical,” commented Janneke Niessen, founding companion at CapitalT.

The corporate plans to make use of this contemporary capital towards advancing product growth of cultured wooden and increasing the corporate’s interdisciplinary R&D group, which operates on the intersection of cell biology, supplies engineering, physics, and course of engineering.

The group brings collectively experience in plant biotechnology, biopolymer engineering, bioinformatics, bioprinting and additive manufacturing, from main establishments corresponding to Harvard Medical College, College of Amsterdam and ETH Zurich.

New Daybreak Bio is a participant within the Eurostars-funded BRANCH undertaking in partnership with LIST (Luxembourg Institute of Science and Expertise).
