    Government Workers Say Their Out-of-Office Replies Were Forcibly Changed to Blame Democrats for Shutdown

    On Wednesday, the first day of the US authorities shutdown, staff on the Division of Training (DOE) set their computerized out-of-office electronic mail responses to tell recipients that they’d be unable to reply till after the shutdown. Hours later, many DOE staff realized their response message had been altered to include partisan language with out their consent. The automated reply now blamed Senate Democrats for the complete shutdown.

    It’s not clear who made the change to electronic mail accounts, which was first posted about on Bluesky by journalist Marisa Kabas. “It’s disturbing,” says a DOE worker who requested to stay nameless as a result of they weren’t licensed to talk to the press. Some staff modified their responses again to the extra impartial language, solely to have it modified but once more to the partisan response, a number of sources inform WIRED.

Sadly, Democrat Senators are blocking passage of HR 5371 within the Senate which has led to a lapse in appropriations. Because of the lapse in appropriations I’m at present in furlough standing. I’ll reply to emails as soon as authorities capabilities resume.”
